With Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa this week, the Tribune takes a daily look at the memories of a past Super Bowl participant with roots in the Tampa Bay area.
CHARLEY HANNAH
Past And Present
*NFL Career: Offensive lineman for Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1977-82); Los Angeles Raiders (1983-88).
*Glory Days: Hannah, an All-SEC defensive lineman at Alabama, switched to offensive tackle in his second year. The transition to right tackle was relatively seamless. Bucs starting QB Doug Williams was sacked only seven times all season.
*Current Position: Co-owner of Hannah Bartoletta Homes, a Tampa firm he founded with Mike Bartoletta in 1988.
Super Bowl Experience
*Super Bowl XVIII at Tampa (Raiders 38, Redskins 9) - Hannah started at left guard for the Raiders, who manhandled Washington and had 231 rushing yards, including a Super Bowl-record 191 by Marcus Allen.
Three Questions
Q. What's your biggest memory of returning to Tampa for a Super Bowl game?
A. I guess just playing in the game - period. I was injured in the AFC Championship Game two weeks earlier and I played with two ribs separated from my sternum. I had the option of not playing, but this was the Super Bowl. They devised a special pad that deflected the force if I got hit directly in the chest, so it wouldn't puncture my lung. That probably sounds crazy to most people, but that's Football.
Q. Does the Super Bowl ever come up in your business life?
A. One of the funniest things happened when I was in an airport in Indiana. I'm sitting there talking to a guy in a restaurant and I look up and notice ESPN is playing the Raiders-Redskins game. I'm staring at it and he says, "What are you looking at?" And I say, "Believe it or not ? me!" I pointed to the left guard on the screen, then showed him my Super Bowl ring, where it says "Hannah" on the side. He was kind of dumbstruck. That chance encounter was probably the craziest circumstance.
Q. How often do you bring out the Super Bowl ring?
A. I'm actually wearing it pretty often these days. It's a little marker in your life, a reminder of a great time. But you move on to other things. Somebody told me once, "Charley, you talk about the Super Bowl like it was a vacation you once took. If I played in the Super Bowl, I'd talk about it all the time." That might be true, but really, it's something that happened quite a while ago. It is a nice memory, though. It's nicer to go there and win it instead of going there and losing it.
