Oakland Raiders Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-07
The Raiders moved undrafted free agent Marcel Reece, an intriguing physical specimen from Washington, from wide receiver to fullback. At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, Reece was wearing No. 81 and working with wideouts, but was gradually being utilized as an H-back.

The shift became official when he showed up at practice wearing No. 45.

--T-G Mark Wilson sustained a broken left leg in practice and will be placed on injured reserve.

--T-G Fred Wakefield moved from defensive end to the offensive line, where he will play at right guard and tackle.

--WR Johnathan Holland, who spent last season on injured reserve after a shoulder injury early in camp, has played well and is pushing incumbent Johnnie Lee Higgins, a third-round choice last season.

--LG Paul McQuistan has been running laps almost daily during practice, the team's punishment for a false start.

--S Greg Wesley, who fell behind in his bid to claim a roster spot because he is missing time due to back spasms, made it through four consecutive practices at one point.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Josh Shaw vs. William Joseph at DT -- The three tackles in the rotation, Tommy Kelly, Terdell Sands and Gerard Warren, all have physical issues. Kelly is not yet in top shape after rehabbing from knee surgery, Sands had a knee drained and Warren was missing practice time with a thigh injury. That gives Shaw and Joseph a chance to work with the first unit. Shaw had the upper hand initially, but Joseph made a handful of plays in a two-day period to state his case.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Todd Watkins vs. Arman Shields and Chaz Schilens at WR -- Watkins was a street free agent cut from Atlanta and has been a camp surprise, catching everything in sight. Shields, a fourth-round pick, has outperformed Schilens but has missed time due to injury. ... Jake Grove vs. John Wade at C -- With Chris Morris moving to guard occasionally, it appears it is a two-man race. If his knee holds up, Grove is in the lead and appears ready to claim the job. ... Jarrod Cooper vs. Greg Wesley at backup S -- Cooper has been one of the most vocal players in practice and isn't above laying a lick at the best of Lane Kiffin to keep things lively. Wesley's back spasms and missed practices have him trailing Cooper.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Nnamdi Asomugha -- Asomugha has four interceptions in team sessions -- three of them he caught on the dead run and ran for would-be touchdowns. He has been the best player in camp since the day he arrived after signing his exclusive franchise free agent tender.

ROOKIE REPORT: RB Darren McFadden has been utilized in a variety of ways in the backfield and has been a revelation. The Raiders want him to split carries with Justin Fargas, but they might be tempted to give him most of the work. ... S Tyvon Branch is the favorite to be the kickoff return specialist and is learning the ropes at safety after playing cornerback in college. ... WR Arman Shields is slowed by a surgically repaired knee and could face injured reserve if he can't put practices together. DE Trevor Scott, at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, simply may not have enough bulk to play end in the NFL and may need a season on the practice squad. WR Chaz Schilens caught a touchdown pass on a fade route from Andrew Walter to culminate a 99-yard drive.

INJURY REPORT: S Greg Wesley missed seven of the first eight practices because of back spasms but returned to action.

LB Grant Irons has missed all of camp with a hamstring pull.

Rookie WR Arman Shields has missed several practice sessions with a sore knee after having surgery.

DT Gerard Warren is day-to-day with a thigh bruise.

DT Terdell Sands missed practice to have his left knee drained and will practice only once during two-a-days.

CB John Bowie is out with a knee injury and is day-to-day.
