Oakland Raiders Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-29

--OT Seth Wand, placed on injured reserve earlier this month due to a knee injury, was released.

--WR Javon Walker had two receptions for 28 yards. He has two or fewer receptions in five of the six games in which he has been active.

--FB Luke Lawton had a team-high three special teams tackles and had some snaps on offense in his most extensive playing time.

--DE Derrick Burgess (triceps) was inactive against Baltimore. Interim coach Tom Cable said he was day-to-day this week, with the hope he would be ready to face the Falcons.

--RB Darren McFadden (turf toe) was held out of the Baltimore game in the hopes that he would be ready to face Atlanta on Sunday.

--CB DeAngelo Hall had his best game in coverage against the Ravens.

PASSING OFFENSE: C-minus -- JaMarcus Russell was able to make some big throws downfield on occasion in the second half, totaling 192 of his 228 yards passing, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Justin Griffith. Included was a 60-yard rainbow to Chaz Schilens. He also had one interception and nearly had two others late in the game. Russell was sacked four times as the Raiders had their worst game of the season in terms of pass protection.

RUSHING OFFENSE: F -- The Raiders had their lowest rushing output of the season -- 47 yards on 19 carries -- and 13 of those came on a Russell scramble. Justin Fargas had 24 yards on 14 attempts, Michael Bush 8 yards on five tries as Darren McFadden sat it out because of turf toe. Oakland had no rushing first downs in the first half and only two in the game. The offensive line simply couldn't budge the Ravens at the point of attack.

PASS DEFENSE: D -- Demetrius Williams was astonishingly open on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco on one of the worst blown coverages you'll ever see. Making it worse is Todd Heap was equally open on the other side. The Ravens worked a gadget play to perfection when Troy Smith took a handoff from Flacco, then found the quarterback circling out of the backfield for a 43-yard gain.

RUSH DEFENSE: D -- One week after the Raiders lamented the big chunks of yardage given up to the Jets (242 rushing yards), the Ravens used a steady procession of shorter gains to total 162 yards on 47 carries and dominate the clock. The Raiders fared well against Willis McGahee, who needed 23 carries to gain 58 yards, but rookie Ray Rice had 64 yards on eight carries and Le'Ron McClain gained 32 yards on seven attempts.

SPECIAL TEAMS: F -- Six games of good to excellent special teams play came to an end in a meltdown. A Hiram Eugene holding penalty on a punt return backed the Raiders up to the 3, field position that led to a Ravens safety. Baltimore's Jim Leonhard returned a punt 46 yards to the Oakland 17 to set up another score. Johnnie Lee Higgins fielded a kickoff on the run and ran out of bounds at the 2. Shane Lechler's 37.2-yard net with no kicks inside the 20 was well below his standard. Higgins averaged 18.2 on kickoff returns and 1.7 yards on punt returns.

COACHING D-minus -- Whatever the reason, the Raiders weren't remotely prepared to match the Ravens' intensity despite talking about it all week leading up to the game. The Ravens offense was much more creative, utilizing a "Wildcat" formation with Troy Smith and getting 64 yards of offense from it. Although the Raiders run a "Wildcat" of their own when McFadden is healthy, they didn't defend it.
