PLAYER NOTES

--DT Gerard Warren has a torn pectoral muscle and is being evaluated. He could be out for the Chargers game, if not longer.

--RB Justin Fargas, out of the Buffalo game with a groin strain, will be evaluated this week but may sit out another game so he can return after the bye.

--DE Derrick Burgess underwent an MRI for a triceps injury.

--RG Cooper Carlisle left with an ankle injury against Buffalo and returned, but may not practice this week and could miss the San Diego game. Chris Morris is the backup.

--LB Kirk Morrison led the Raiders with 10 tackles and had a forced fumble, his first double-digit game in tackles this season.

--FB Justin Griffith became the first back other than Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden and Michael Bush to carry the ball and was stopped for no gain on his only carry.

--DE Kalimba Edwards has sacks in each of the two games he has been active as the Raiders' nickel rusher.

REPORT CARD VS. BILLS

PASSING OFFENSE: D-plus - An 84-yard touchdown pass from JaMarcus Russell on a slant pass to Johnnie Lee Higgins was the lone highlight, giving the Raiders an ill-fated 23-14 lead with 4:09 to play. Other than that pass and a 23-yard pass to Ashley Lelie, Russell was 7 of 17 for 54 yards. He lost a fumble on a sack but wasn't intercepted. Coach Lane Kiffin had so little trust in the passing game the Raiders passed only three times in 17 second-half plays.

RUSHING OFFENSE: D - Michael Bush and Darren McFadden each carried 14 times, with Bush getting 55 yards and McFadden 42 as the Raiders had 98 yards on 30 carries a week after gaining 300. The strategy to wear down the Bills in the second half backfired, as Oakland had just 24 yards on 14 carries in the second half. McFadden, playing with turf toe, had problems keeping his footing. Bush had some nice gains early but had just six yards on his last eight carries.

PASS DEFENSE: D-plus - Very good early, then a complete and utter collapse. When starting defensive tackle Gerard Warren got hurt and the Raiders got tired, the pressure ceased and coordinator Rob Ryan opted to play it safe with disastrous results. In Buffalo's last three drives, Trent Edwards was 14 of 18 for 182 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. In the first half, the Raiders had three sacks of Edwards, an interception by DeAngelo Hall which set up a touchdown and attacked with both natural pressure and some well-timed blitzes.

RUSH DEFENSE: B - Only when left on the field too long did the Bills begin to get steady yardage. Marshawn Lynch averaged 3.6 yards per carry with 83 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. He skirted left end for a 14-yard run and bulled in from 3 yards to bring the Bills within 23-21 in the second half. Tommy Kelly and Gerard Warren helped close off rush lanes. Middle linebacker Kirk Morrison had 10 tackles and forced a fumble.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A-minus - The only flaw was a 56-yard kickoff return by Leodis McKelvin which didn't hurt because the Raiders defense forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing possession. Otherwise, the Raiders outplayed an excellent Bills special teams unit in every area. Higgins opened with a 69-yard kickoff return to set up a field goal and had a 20-yard punt return. Shane Lechler averaged 50.8 yards per punt, 46.0 net and pinned the Bills inside the 20 four times.

COACHING: D - The bottom line is Kiffin's ultra-conservative offensive strategy, when combined with Ryan's decision to call off the pressure in the second half, conspired to torpedo the Raiders in a game they could have won. The Raiders haven't won consistently in so long they may have forgotten how, so they look to their coaches to provide winning strategy. The Raiders twice had nine-point leads in the fourth quarter and couldn't close it out.
