Oakland Raiders Strategy and Personnel 2009-02-13

Oakland Raiders Strategy and Personnel 2009-02-13
Before determining which players they want to bring back, Oakland must determine the fate of underachievers who don't fit into the vision of the future.

Left tackle Kwame Harris, a fidgety flop at left tackle, and wide receiver Ronald Curry are almost certain to go. Others who could be looking for jobs include safety Michael Huff and defensive tackle Terdell Sands.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

Aside from the obvious dilemma of Asomugha and Lechler, the Raiders will be looking hard at re-signing cornerback Chris Johnson, who had a surprisingly good season at age 29 in his first year as a fulltime starter after DeAngelo Hall was cut after eight games which cost the club $8 million.

Other unrestricted free agents who the Raiders figure to make a move on before free agency hits are center Jake Grove, core special teamer Isaiah Ekejiuba and kickoff return specialist Justin Miller.

TOP THREE TEAM NEEDS

1. Offensive tackle: Mario Henderson gave the Raiders a glimmer of hope as a starting left tackle over the final three games, controlling Mario Williams and Gaines Adams. Right tackle Cornell Green struggled, and rushers too often got to QB JaMarcus Russell.

2. Defensive line: Whether it is an end or a tackle, the Raiders need a stout, energetic force who is particularly tough against the run. The Raiders finished 31st in rush defense.

3. Wide receiver: As much as Davis loves the potential of Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens, Oakland had frighteningly little production outside despite having a big-time thrower as the quarterback.

MEDICAL WATCH: Team Owner Al Davis said at the press conference announcing the hire of coach Tom Cable that quarterback JaMarcus Russell would have surgery to "clean out" an ankle injury which hampered the quarterback late in the season.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--CB Nnamdi Asomugha is expected to receive an exclusive franchise tag which will put his salary at approximately $11.7 million after his first Pro Bowl season.

--FS Rashad Baker played in 10 games with one start and received extensive playing time toward the latter part of the season.

--G Cooper Carlisle has started 31 of 32 games at right guard since arriving as a free agent from the Denver Broncos, although he was better in 2007 than he was in 2008.

--WR Drew Carter suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the next-to-last preseason game, spending the season on injured reserve. He has had four ACL surgeries - two on each knee.

--LB Isaiah Ekejiuba has been one of the Raiders core special teams players for the past three seasons.

--C Jake Grove voided the final year of his contract after making 12 starts and an impressive comeback from microfracture knee surgery.

--CB Chris Johnson took over left cornerback when DeAngelo Hall was waived and had three interceptions with 12 passes defensed.

--DL William Joseph didn't make it through the final cut in training camp but was re-signed during the season, playing eight games and contributing three tackles and five assists.

--P Shane Lechler made it to his third Pro Bowl with a 48.8 average and a career-best 41.2 net with 33 kicks inside the 20-yard line.

--WR Ashley Lelie played in 13 games before missing the final three games with an ankle injury, catching 11 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns.

--CB Justin Miller helped energize the Raiders kickoff return team, running back two for touchdowns in seven games after he was waived by the Jets.

--TE Tony Stewart caught 11 passes in 16 games after catching zero in 16 games in 2007. He is primarily a special teams player and a blocking tight end.

--QB Marques Tuiasosopo moved past Andrew Walter to become the backup to JaMarcus Russell for the last quarter of the season, although he didn't get in a game.

--LB Sam Williams is a favorite of the owner and hasn't developed as a strong side linebacker but has some special teams value.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--LB Jon Alston started the last four games at strong side linebacker in addition to being a core special teams player and finished with a career-high 34 tackles.

--LB Ricky Brown won the starting job as the starting strong side linebacker in training camp but ended up missing the last nine games with a severe groin injury.

--C Chris Morris can play both center and guard but could be expendable if the Raiders blend more power blocking in with the strict zone scheme they've played the last two years.
