Oakland Raiders Notes, Quotes 2009-01-06
--LB Thomas Howard wasn't sure what the future holds for defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, but he figured the last two games can't hurt him, wherever he winds up.

Ryan's five-year contract is up, and although the Raiders were ranked 31st in the league, allowing 159.7 yards per game on the ground, they played well the final two games in wins over Houston and Tampa Bay.

"Rob was jut glad the way we finished, not only representing ourselves, but him as well. He was proud of us," Howard said. "I don't know if he'll be here or not, but it's part of his resume and part of our resume. Whoever is here next year will be able to look at the film and see who didn't quit."

--The sentiment in the Oakland locker room regarding Tom Cable, in contrast to predecessor Lane Kiffin, was that the interim coach seemed less inclined to make himself the center of attention.

"He has no ego," LB Kirk Morrison said.

Added LG Robert Gallery: "He's the same guy, just has a lot more on his hands as a head coach, but he's the same dude. He's never changed since he's been here, and that's what everybody likes about him."

--LT Mario Henderson was one of the late Raiders success stories, starting the last three games for struggling veteran free agent signee Kwame Harris, committing no penalties, and giving himself a chance to win the job outright at the next training camp.

Henderson was a frequent target of ex-coach Lane Kiffin, who routinely criticized him when talking with reporters. Interim coach Tom Cable conceded he was rough on Henderson as well, although it was usually in private.

"I coached that guy for two years, so I know what his deficits are," Cable said. "You want him to go out there and play. You try to play him in the preseason as much as you can and get him through the issues he has going on. Then all of a sudden the regular season starts and you don't feel like he's ready.

"Then he brought his game up, and the person at his spot is going the other way. You make the change, he took hold if his opportunity and did a tremendous job with it."

--DE Trevor Scott, a sixth-round pick from Buffalo, ended up tying veteran Kalimba Edwards for the team lead in sacks with five.

A converted tight end, Scott needs another 10 to 15 pounds on his frame, but he has a non-stop motor.

"A lot of times you learn just from watching Derrick Burgess and Kalimba," Scott said. "They're just so relentless in what they do and are so hard-working. It pushes me when I step on the field to be like those guys."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Speaking of Lane Kiffin, I know we definitely enjoyed beating Monte and sending him to Tennessee. It was kind of fun for all of us." -- LB Thomas Howard, regarding the Raiders defeating the Buccaneers and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who will be on son Lane's staff at the University of Tennessee as defensive coordinator next year.
