-- His hopes of shedding the label of "interim" coach growing more slim with every defeat, Tom Cable, 2-7 since taking over for Lane Kiffin, wants the Raiders to play out the string with some dignity.
"I hope to win some games, win all three of them, between now and the end of the year," Cable said. "I spoke to them about that very issue. I want to finish the last three weeks, like men, with honor, playing the game the way it's supposed to be played, with discipline, and toughness, and fighting our butts off the whole way."
-- The Raiders have been talking about increasing McFadden's workload as he recovers from turf toe, but when the Chargers game had ended, the rookie incredibly had the same amount of tackles as touches -- three.
In fact, McFadden's three tackles after San Diego turnovers were as many as starting defensive tackle Gerard Warren (three) and starting right end Kalimba Edwards (two).
On the second play from scrimmage, quarterback JaMarcus Russell threw a lateral which McFadden caught and was dropped for no gain. He was not involved in another running play the rest of the game. He caught two passes for eight yards.
Cable said McFadden's limited use was not because of reasons of health.
"I really think it's the way the game went," Cable said. "You look at it, there was a little bit of movement in terms of a couple first downs in the first half, the second half, really out of whack. "
-- Justin Miller had a 92-yard kickoff return just before the end of the half, allowing the Raiders to trail 27-7 at intermission.
"Sure it made us feel better," Miller said. "It gave us some momentum, and anything can happen in this game.
It ended up being the Raiders' lone touchdown of the game, and is the third return for a touchdown in the last four games. Punt return specialist Johnnie Lee Higgins had a 93-yard return for a score against Miami and an 89-yard return for a touchdown against Denver.
Miller's touchdown came after he had broken a 36-yard return up the middle earlier. Attempts to go outside on returns netted little yardage.
"Earlier we were trying to go outside and things weren't working the way we wanted them too, but taking it up the middle worked to our advantage," Miller said.
