Oakland Raiders Notes, Quotes 2008-10-29
--RB Darren McFadden, after saying emphatically during the week he would be good to go against Baltimore, was inactive for the first time this season because of turf toe on his right foot.

McFadden was limited during practice, and there was some confusion as to his status going in, as a Raiders spokesman said he was probable but the official designation for the league was questionable.

"It was just one of those game-time decisions," McFadden said. "It wasn't as good as I thought it would be, so we just decided not to go. Getting out there, pushing off of it is hard, and you don't want to go halfway."

McFadden hasn't been the same since incurring the injury in Week 2, when he gained 164 yards against the Chiefs.

Said interim coach Tom Cable: "He woke up with some soreness this morning, and it was a situation where if he was to play, it could worsen. So I decided to sit him and dress a third tight end."

Cable wasn't blaming McFadden's absence for the Raiders' anemic performance.

"I'm not sure Darren McFadden or anyone else would have mattered," Cable said. "We just got whipped at the line of scrimmage in the first half."

--WR Johnnie Lee Higgins kept his head down, tying his shoes, barely managing to raise his head to answer questions.

One of the bright spots in the first six games of the season on special teams with both his kickoff and punt returns, Higgins made a freshman football mistake when he fielded a Ravens kickoff on the run and ran out of bounds at the 2-yard line. It didn't lead directly to any points, but it kept the Raiders pinned deep in their own territory against a tough defense.

"I didn't realize where I was on the field," Higgins said. "I've got to get my awareness up so next time it won't happen."

When asked if there was any explanation for Higgins' gaffe, Cable said, "None whatsoever."

Higgins, who had given up kickoff return duties to Tyvon Branch against the Jets, got the job back but averaged just 18.2 yards per return after averaging 25.2 coming in. It was a dismal game all around for Oakland's special teams.

"We know what we're capable of, and we've got to do better," Higgins said. "I didn't do my part. I feel very, very bad. I feel like I let a lot of people down. Next week I'll be playing with my heart, laying it all on the line."

--LB Ricky Brown saw it coming and still couldn't stop it.

Ravens No. 2 QB Troy Smith joined starting QB Joe Flacco in the backfield, with Flacco lining up in a shotgun formation. Flacco handed the ball to Smith, then circled out of the backfield to his left.

Smith then arched a perfect 43-yard pass that Flacco caught with his fingertips before stumbling to the artificial surface, with Brown in close pursuit.

"I figured the ball was coming because I saw Flacco coming out there hard," Brown said. "I figured the ball was in the air, and I made the mistake you never want to make -- I looked back. When you look back at the ball, you stop your momentum.

"That's a play I'm confident in myself to make. I've got to deliver on that. Troy Smith threw a great pass, but I could have been better."

--Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan posed for pictures before the game with their father Buddy Ryan, who was in attendance.

Then Rex's defense got the upper hand for the second time since both men have been defensive coordinator with their respective employers. In 2004, the Raiders first asked to speak to Rex Ryan for their opening but were denied permission.

They later hired Rob off the staff of the New England Patriots, where he coached inside linebackers under head coach Bill Belichick and defensive coordinator Eric Mangini.

"I'll let him get on that plane, go home, and then I'll call him and rub it in a little bit," Rex Ryan said. "I'm a huge Raider fan. When they win, sometimes I wear a Raiders hat."
