Raiders interim coach Tom Cable was doing his best to deflect talk of his own status in the wake of a 31-24 win over the Buccaneers that would seemingly make him a viable candidate to retain the position.

Cable said didn't have a scheduled time to speak with team owner Al Davis, but he expected to have a conversation at some point during the week.

"It's not in my control. I know something good is going to happen. That's the only way I know how to look at it," Cable said at his season-ending press briefing Monday. "I'm a line coach by trade. I'm good with that. I love coaching those guys. I can call plays. I'm pretty good at that. And I can run a football team, and I proved that."

The Raiders won their last two games of the season for the first time since 2002, and it was their first win outside of the state of California after Dec. 1 since they beat the Kansas City Chiefs 41-38 in overtime in 1999.

Davis was not present at the Bucs game, missing his first game since 1979 because doctors advised him not to fly because of swelling in his knee and ankle.

Before hiring a coach, Davis must first adhere to the "Rooney Rule" and interview a minority candidate.

Raiders wide receivers coach James Lofton has twice interviewed with the Davis (while he was a Chargers assistant) for the head-coaching positions that went to Art Shell and Lane Kiffin.

One thing in Cable's favor has been his willingness to deal with Davis. Kiffin, fired on Sept. 30, essentially butted heads with Davis for six months before being fired "for cause," according to Davis.

"The whole journey has been very good," Cable said. "It's been great in terms of communication. I have not backed away from that or shied away from it. I felt like that was the most important thing to do was communicate with him.

"He's been great in that sense. We've had agreements, we've had disagreements, we've had everything in between, which I think is normal. I think that's the way it should be to try and get something the way you want it to be. I've enjoyed all of that. I really have."
