Raiders wide receivers have been taking turns trying to establish a connection with quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
In a 31-10 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High, it was Ashley Lelie's turn.
For the third consecutive game, Russell completed passes to only one wide receiver. Lelie came through against his former teammates in a big way with four receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Two plays stood out -- a 51-yard pass from Russell that came immediately after the Broncos had tied the score 10-10, and a 4-yard touchdown reception that put the Raiders up 24-10.
Last week, flanker Ronald Curry was the only wide receiver to catch any passes against the Dolphins, with six catches for 73 yards. The week before, Javon Walker had two catches for 27 yards. No other wide receiver caught any passes against Carolina.
Walker was injured against Carolina and is out for the season, with Lelie stepping in to the starting lineup. He said he began to get comfortable with Russell during the week of practice leading up to the Denver game.
"It started building up the last couple of weeks, but this week in practice we really felt good," Lelie said. "I've been dreaming about this moment ever since I've been here, coming back to Invesco Field. It feels good that it's with the Raiders."
He had 92 receiving yards, the biggest individual output of the season from a Raiders receiver, the bulk of it coming on the 51-yard pass in which Lelie out-leaped former teammate Dre Bly.
"We hit that play numerous times in practice this week," Russell said. "I told him if he got a step I was going to throw it, and for him to just go for it."
Lelie's departure from the Broncos was a bitter one, as he refused to report to the team before the 2006 season until he was finally traded to the Atlanta Falcons. He didn't try to contain his glee in taking down his former team.
"It's kind of like you've been wronged, an ex-girlfriend or something cheating on you, and you're coming back and getting her back," Lelie said.
Russell said he didn't realize how significant the win was for Lelie until the game was in hand.
"I knew it, but I didn't fully understand it until the end of the day," Russell said. "It was big for him to come back and have a big game."
