Ygnacio Valley High has hired former Raiders assistant coach Chris Turner to become its new head Football coach for the 2009 season.
Turner, who also has coached at San Jose State and Bucknell, spent 2008 as the offensive line coach at his alma mater, Alhambra. He is the nephew of San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner and Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner.
"I made a decision a while back that I wanted to go back to school and get a credential and become a head coach," Turner said. "I was coaching the offensive line at Alhambra last year and was kind of set to do that again next year, but the Ygnacio Valley job came up and I just felt it was too good an opportunity to pass up."
Turner was an offensive assistant for Bill Callahan when the Raiders played in Super Bowl XXXVII. He comes from an offensive background and said fans can expect a change from the double-wing, double-tight end offense that the Warriors have featured over the past several seasons.
"It's a challenge that I'm going to have, transitioning to more of a pro-style offense," Turner said. "I believe in running the Football and power Football and that's their strength. I think we match up well that way."
Turner said he accepted the job Wednesday and has spent the last few days meeting the players. He is replacing Josh Davis, who resigned earlier this month after three seasons.
"I know they are tough, physical kids and those are the kids I like to coach," Turner said. "I've been around them a little this week and they seem like great kids and tough kids."
BOYS SOCCER
Acalanes 1, Alhambra 0: The Dons (11-4-3, 6-1-2 Diablo Foothill Athletic League) and Bulldogs (5-6-0, 4-5-0) had a hard time getting into the flow of the game, which affected their DFAL showdown.
There were 15 cards issued, including two reds and a double yellow. In addition, the center referee also called countless fouls and had numerous stoppages that led to 13 minutes of extra time being added.
Luckily for the Dons, they were able to score in the third minute before both teams were completely taken out of their games.
"It turned into a stoppage event," said Acalanes coach Paul Curtis. "It was difficult for us to get into a rhythm. We were in one, but then we lost it."
The only goal came after a foul, creating a set piece for the Dons. On the free kick from 23 yards out, Nate Sonnenthal was able to stick it in the net.
From that point on, it was virtually impossible for either team to get into any sort of flow.
"It turned into a farce," Alhambra coach Dave Coroner said. "Instead of it being about the players and schools it became about the official, and that's not right. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to this game where two talented teams should have been on display."

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Carondelet basketball player Ricki Radanovich has made an oral commitment to attend the University of Santa Clara on a full athletic scholarship.
"I wanted to stay on the West Coast," said Radanovich, a 5-foot-10 junior guard. "I really loved the coaching staff when I met them. I love the school, it's close to home. ... It's a great academic school. It felt like a great fit.
"I knew that's what I wanted. That's the exact school that I was looking for," said Radanovich about making her decision in her junior year.
Radanovich also considered Princeton, Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara. She was a third-team All-Times selection last year, averaging 12 points and four assists a game.
