Bills hire Sanders for D-line
The Buffalo Bills have found a veteran replacement to serve as their new defensive line coach.

He is Bob Sanders, who was fired this month after three years as defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.

Sanders, 55, has coached eight years in the NFL and 22 years in the major college ranks. He replaces Bill Kollar, who left the Bills to join the Houston Texans.

In 2007, Sanders' defense helped Green Bay to a 13-3 finish. The Pack ranked third in the NFL in third-down defense, sixth in scoring defense and 11th in yards allowed.

This season, however, the Packers slumped to 22nd in yards, 20th in points and 26th against the run. Numerous injuries hurt Green Bay's cause. But Sanders was fired along with four other defensive assistants. Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy subsequently decided to switch to a 3-4 scheme for next season.

Sanders has worked with a 4-3 defensive front throughout his career. He worked under respected defensive coordinator Jim Bates in Miami from 2001 to 2004 (as linebackers coach) and in Green Bay in 2005 (as defensive ends coach).

Sanders spent 10 years on the staff at the University of Florida under head coach Steve Spurrier from 1990 to 2000.

Raiders set to keep Cable

OAKLAND, Calif. -- ESPN and NFL.com reported Wednesday the Oakland Raiders have decided the "interim" tag on head coach Tom Cable would be removed.

Not so fast, say the Raiders.

"We have not made a decision at this time," said Raiders senior executive John Herrera.

A source close to Cable said the interim head coach had yet to be told he is the Raiders' choice. ESPN reported the Raiders told one of the other job candidates of the decision to go with Cable.

NFL.com reported Raiders owner Al Davis had started telling others of his decision.
