We’re well on our way to weighing in on the Brett Favre situation, and Tim Brown, former Oakland Raiders wideout, now has the microphone: … Brown says Brett Favre should stay retired and that there’s “absolutely, positively” no way the star quarterback will return to the Green Bay Packers.
“There’s no way he’s going to be back in that locker room now,” Brown said this week. “Absolutely, positively no way. They’re just trying to say the right thing, hoping that he comes to his senses.” …
“I don’t think he serves himself or anybody any good by coming back,” he said. “Bottom line is this: If this was anybody else, this wouldn’t be a conversation, because they’d be like, ‘Man, you’re retired. Go on about your business. What’s wrong with you?’ I’m pretty sure Packers general manager Ted Thompson agrees with Brown, but as FoxSports.com’s Jason Whitlock points out, Thompson has everything to lose by letting Favre go, and virtually nothing to gain, barring a out-of-his-mind first-year performance by Aaron Rodgers.
So while it seems odd to suggest that a just-retired 17-year veteran has all the leverage, that’s exactly the case. I don’t think Favre’s return is in the best (long-term) interests of the Packers, but nobody’ll be complaining if Green Bay wins another Super Bowl. Of course, if Favre’s last pass is of the season-ending-interception variety, we’ll all be back on the Aaron Rodgers bandwagon. So there’s that.
In the meantime, I’m with Brown in theory, but Whitlock in practice.
